There are few training courses that are required by law. Asbestos Awareness is one of them. This everyday substance still kills around 20 trades persons per week as a result of past exposure.
Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 states that:
“Every employer must ensure that any employee….is given adequate information, instruction and training where that employee- a) Is or is liable to be exposed to asbestos, or if that employees supervises such employees.…”
The Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) “Managing and working with asbestos” says that workers in the refurbishment, maintenance and allied trades where it is foreseeable that Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) may become exposed during their work should have training. This includes, but is not limited to demolition and construction workers, general maintenance staff, electricians, plumbers, gas fitters, painters and decorators, joiners, shop fitters, plasterers, roofers, heating and ventilation engineers, telecommunication engineers, computer and data installers, fire and burglar alarm installers, architects, building surveyors and other such professionals.
The ACoP also states that:
“Employers have a duty of ensure that the information, instruction and training given to their employees is adequate to allow them to safeguard themselves and other employees and to carry out their work with asbestos effectively”
Therefore, the asbestos awareness should cover the following:
- the properties of asbestos and its effects on health, including the increased risk of developing lung cancer for asbestos workers who smoke
- the types, uses and likely occurrence of asbestos and asbestos materials in buildings and plant
- the general procedures to deal with an emergency, for example an uncontrolled release of asbestos dust into the workplace
- how to avoid the risk of exposure to asbestos
